“Always inspired by the unique diversity and beauty of Hawai’i Nei, Barbara Jelks, a local resident portrays the essence of life on Hawai’i Island through her watercolor paintings. “Plein Air” painting, which is the painting outdoors on location, provides the artist with the challenge to convey what is really happening at that particular time and place. This method forces the artist to be focused and work quickly in order to complete a painting before the light changes. You can’t paint a morning painting in the afternoon. You must have patience and discipline to work when dealing with the changes of weather and light, and the usual distraction of onlookers. Painting has been a lifelong adventure, exploring many various cultures and counties around the world while developing an individual style, Tim Clark workshops have been an integral part of this process, always providing excellent instruction, criticism, demonstrations and locations. It is passion the drives the artist to always seek new ways of seeing light, color, shape, value and form while portraying and evoking an emotional feeling. The collection is a series of recent works of various painting from Hawai’i Island for this showing at Puuopelu.”
