The Volcano Adventures of Keikilani, the Kona Nightingale

by Kimberly A. Jackson, illustrated by Karen Dougherty Spachner

Follow Keikilani, the singing donkey, as she travels to Volcano on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. Keikilani, known as Lani, visits the town of Volcano where she meets a new friend, Kana. Together, they ask Madame Pele, the goddess of the volcano, to help them solve a problem. Join the adventure and see what Madame Pele does to help Lani and her new friend Kana.

From Keikilani, The Kona Nightingale, the first in a series of books about Keikilani:

“Most of Kona’s donkeys bray (hee-haw) at night… which is a donkey’s way of singing, but it isn’t very pretty. A few special donkeys sing like birds. These donkeys are called Kona nightingales. A nightingale is a bird that sings beautiful songs at night. One of these special donkeys was Keikilani (Kay-kee-law-nee), which means child of heaven in Hawaiian. She was called Lani for short.” – Vonnie Lyons

The Volcano Adventures of Keikilani was written by Kimberly A. Jackson and illustrated by Karen Dougherty Spachner, in memory of author Vonnie Lyons, who left storyline notes for this book.

Kimberly A. Jackson works in her ‘day job’ as an estate-planning attorney however; her passions include writing and tap dancing. She is the author of several Hawaiian children’s books and lives in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, with her husband and daughter.

Karen D. Spachner majored in art at Deal College, Franklin, MA, and studied at the New York School of Visual Arts. Her move to Hawaii 20 years ago infused her images with a gently sophisticated approach with Rousseau-like color and pattern. Karen’s work has emerged as a true portrait of Hawaii, as she captures local fish, historical sites, beaches, and flora and fauna. She also illustrated the original Keikilani, the Kona Nightingale.
