"Loyal to the Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch, 1970 - 1992" by Dr. Billy Bergin

Parker Ranch, located in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, is not only one of the country’s largest cattle ranches but it is
also one of the oldest and most historic. Loyal to the Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch, Volumes 1 and 2 covered the years
750—1970. During these years Parker Ranch played an important role in both world wars and went through many changes in
management. Loyal to the Land: The Legendary Parker Ranch, 1970—1992; Volume 3, Agents of Change continues the history
of Parker Ranch and details the beginning of new and aggressive leadership on the ranch.

Strewn with photographs from the time period, Loyal to the Land depicts not only the management changes that took place, but
also the dramatic changes made to the cattle industry in Hawai‘i. Significant of the time was the passing of Parker Ranch’s last
owner and sixth-generation Parker descendent Richard
Smart. With his passing, the end of an era brought about a
board of trustees to oversee Parker Ranch.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Billy Bergin, born in Hawai‘i, received his degree of
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University
in 1967. He returned home in 1968, opening a mixed veterinary
practice in North Kona, Hawai‘i.

In 1970 he took over the responsibility for the health needs
of the fifty thousand head of cattle and two thousand
horses of the legendary Parker Ranch. Over the next three
decades, Dr. Bergin became the architect of modern animal
health techniques and programs that launched Hawai‘i’s
ranching industry into the new millennium.
